When builds you a website, you have 100% ownership of that website.

One of the saddest things I’ve seen in all my years in this industry is when people want a website, and wind up signing up for a service.  They have a website that they can edit, or blog with, but it is being hosted as part of a massive system known as a “Content Management System.”  Excellent tool for people who need one.  But if you ever want to move your site to a new server, or have your niece who has just graduated with a degree in website design to re-build your visual design, you are out of luck.

When you’re “with a service”, there is no getting a second opinion on what can and can’t be done.  There are no second opinions regarding what it might cost to add new functionality.  With a WordPress, your niece will point out that there’s a free plugin that does what you want, she’ll install it, and you’ll be off to the races.

A WordPress gives you all the features most people actually need in terms of being able to present their own types of information and update the site easily.  I can re-skin your old WordPress.  Your niece can re-skin one I make for you.  It’s yours.  People who are comfortable working with WordPress are numerous – you are beholden to no-one, ever.
